The 'SHIRLEY' moves ....

We all remember Shirley doing her - 'Where's that Jolly Jumbuck' move during Watlzing Matilda.
As a tribute to Shirley, from now on, in the moves where we direct our focus to an individual on the risers will be known as a 'Shirley Move'.
Here are 4 of our 'Shirley Moves' for Good Old Acapella....

VALE - Shirley Perry

It is with sorrow that we say goodbye to our friend Shirley Perry.
Shirley had been a member of our Chorus for almost 20 years and she will be sadly missed on the risers.
She was a character, renowned for her dry sense of humour and requests for that extra breath to the plan!
Shirley had been ill over the last few months and was disappointed to have to report to Jan that she would be unable to join us at convention this month in Newcastle.
Chorus members were honoured to be asked to sing at her funeral.
We were joined by past members Shirley Purvis and Wendy Blunt in singing Candle on the Water and Irish Blessing as we said our farewells to our good friend Shirley.
RIP Shirl, may you sing with the angels.

Coaching at Edmund Rice

Here are the movers and shakers Jill, Jan and Virginia.
They kept us all busy on our coaching weekend in early April.
We are gearing up for convention so spent most of our time revising and working on our two comp songs.

This group of our newer members were pleased to receive their membership forms from Sweet Adelines International - you are all legal for Convention now guys - congratulations.

As part of our education, we took it in turns to listen and evaluate the rest of the chorus as 'judges'. It was a great learning process and it has made us more aware of the need to take personal responsibility for our unit sound by vowel matching, turning our diphthongs and holding out the ends of phrases.
It's all systems go now with Convention just a month away.

A new BASS

What happens at Bass practice, stays at Bass practice - except for the Blog!
Our mate Judy has seen the light and moved on from the Lead section to join the Basses!
It's great to have another Bass on board. Welcome Judy.
There are a few bottles on the table and one BIG wine glass but it was AFTER we had done some good practice thanks to Jess and Helen.
Thanks for the great photo Faye

Practice with the guys ....

There are some local guys who are singing Barbershop together and they came along to rehearsal for a few weeks to sing with us. They appreciated the help that Jan gave them as they learn and practice their craft.

Christmas is approaching ...

As Christmas approaches we get pretty busy with singouts.
Here's one of our first ones on Flagstaff Hill in Wollongong.
Lots of nice food, stalls and people having a good time at the multicultural event with Wollongong Harmony Chorus as the guest stars.

Not a great place for sound with our voices being snatched away by the rising wind. A few of us braved the elements to have a quick dinner from the stalls before heading home.

Sing Out for the 50's +

In late November we braved the rain to give a sing out for the 50's+ group at the Church of Christ in Wollongong. After a successful performance we had the pleasure of joining the group for lunch, it was an enjoyable day.

Congratulations

Some membership news - Kath and Maree celebrate their tenth anniversary as Sweet Adelines. Mother and daughter sing together in our Bass section

And welcome to a new member of our Baritone Section - great to have Elise with us

Viva La Gong

A group of members took part in the street parade in the morning with a theme of the seaside and great lighthouse (thanks to Karen) - I'm afraid there are no photo's to hand of that one!
Then in the afternoon we sang in the park just before the storm!

Looking good!

The Bulli Show - September 2010

We were invited to sing at the opening of the Bulli Show and it was a bright sunny day to match our yellow shirts!
Our performance was appreciated especially by the first 'lady' Governor of NSW Marie Bashir.

In September, a good number of members got up early and headed off to Wollongong for the start of the Relay for Life.
Their singing was well received by one and all and they'll be back again next year.

On the Sunday we went along to the Pt Kembla School and spent another day brushing up the presentation of our competition songs.
We are getting better, feeling more confident in the chorrie and preparing for convention in Newcastle in 2011.

Cathy spent time bringing us all up to speed on our barbershop craft.
Reinforcement for the 'oldies' and lots of information for the 'newbies'.

Coaching with Cathy ....

In September we continue our education with a coaching weekend with Cathy Rainey.
Here are a few glimpses of warm ups with Jill at Farnborough Rd.
